Install the Python SDK

Last updated:

Install the Python SDK from PyPI:

pip install babelqueue

The base install is the zero-dependency core (codec, contracts and dead-letter helpers) plus the BabelQueue runtime with an in-process memory:// transport — enough for tests and local development.

Requirements

  • Python >=3.9
  • A running broker for the transport you use (only needed for that transport)

Broker extras

Real brokers are opt-in via extras, which pull in the standard client for that transport:

pip install "babelqueue[redis]" # redis:// (via redis-py)
pip install "babelqueue[amqp]" # amqp:// (RabbitMQ, via pika)
pip install "babelqueue[sqs]" # sqs:// (Amazon SQS, via boto3)
pip install "babelqueue[azureservicebus]" # sb:// (Azure Service Bus, via azure-servicebus)
pip install "babelqueue[pulsar]" # pulsar:// (Apache Pulsar, via pulsar-client)
pip install "babelqueue[kafka]" # kafka:// (Apache Kafka, via confluent-kafka)
pip install "babelqueue[artemis]" # artemis:// (ActiveMQ Artemis, via python-qpid-proton)

Feature and framework extras

pip install "babelqueue[otel]" # OpenTelemetry instrumentation (opentelemetry-api)
pip install "babelqueue[gdpr]" # AES-256-GCM reference cipher for field encryption (cryptography)
pip install "babelqueue[celery]" # Celery adapter
pip install "babelqueue[django]" # Django adapter

See Reliability & governance for [otel] and [gdpr], Celery and Django for the adapters.
